Safety and Health
Knowledge is power. When it comes to safety, knowledge can literally mean
the difference between life and death. The safety and health related
articles below are intended to inform, educate and assist our members on
important issues that affect them, their families and our union as well as
all workers.
The IAM's Safety & Health Department
The IAMAW, along with the other affiliated unions of the AFL-CIO, has
historically promoted workplace safety and health laws. The Occupational
Safety and Health ACT was enacted in 1970 as a direct result of organized
labors support and efforts. These laws have helped not only union workers
but all the workers who come under the ACT.
Protecting lives and making a healthier workplace is just one of the many
benefits provided by the Machinists' Union. The following information is
furnished to educate those workers interested in promoting safety in their
workplaces.
The IAM's Safety & Health Department has a number of responsibilities in
addition to its assisting the leadership and members with safety and health
issues. The department also administrates information on the
IAM's Scholarship program,
provides assistance in developing and setting up
Apprenticeship programs,
IAM C.R.E.S.T., the IAM Corporation for Re-employment and Safety Training,
provides education and training and return to work services for our members
and their employers.
